ICID 2010

The Second International Conference on Climate, Sustainability and Sustainable Development in semiarid regions - ICID will be held in August 2010, at the Convention Center of Ceará in Fortaleza. The Conference aims to achieve the following objectives:

• Gather participants around the world to identify and focus action on the challenges and opportunities facing the arid and semiarid regions of the planet;
• Update knowledge on issues related to these regions in the last 20 years: environmental and climate (variability and change), vulnerabilities, impacts, responses of adaptation and sustainable development;
• Explore synergies between the conventions of the United Nations concerning the development of semiarid regions, and
• Generate information to support governments and society with the aim of improving sustainable economic, environmental, social and semiarid regions.

The ICID wants to sharpen the focus on sustainable development of the semiarid regions of the world, to accelerate the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) to reduce vulnerability, poverty and inequality, improve the quality of natural resources and promote sustainable development.

Likely to support the Rio+20 (2012), the ICID will convene stakeholders around the world to identify and focus action on challenges and opportunities for a better future in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. The aim of ICID is leveraging the best development possible effect of the existing conventions of the UN and provide information and advice to governments and all involved to improve the ecological and social sustainability in arid and semiarid.

The main event of ICID will be a meeting in August 2010, bringing together governments, civil society and experts to assess and articulate the needs and opportunities of the semiarid regions of the world. Comparative studies of policies and summary will be prepared in advance to the ICID, addressing three areas of semi-arid regions: 1) climate and environmental information, 2) human safety, welfare and human development, and 3) processes public policies.

In preparation for the main event of the conference, the ICID vai coordinate research and analysis around clusters themed. The ICID vai ordering individual summaries and cross-sectional studies, research articles based on case studies and comparative studies of groups organized around themes and sub-themes of the ICID. These studies will be organized into panels and working groups focused on summarizing the findings and generate recommendations. The findings of selected summaries and comparative studies will also be present in the House as part of the process of prioritizing recommendations, to define an agenda for action and draw up a declaration of ICID.

The ICID will also produce a volume on Climate, Vulnerability and Adaptation in arid and semiarid, with a summary of policies summarizing the main findings and recommendations, a procedure with the preliminary studies, reports of working groups and the declaration of ICID+18 . The process of ICID+18 will take the knowledge of the social and natural sciences and develop networks to help to leverage policy changes and action on the ground. In response to a large outcry for social science research on problems and opportunities related to climate change, the ICID should involve a wide range of social scientists - from anthropology, enconomia, history, political science, sociology - the study of consequences and variations and responses to climate change and environment.

The processes and main findings and recommendations of ICID will be offered as a contribution to support the implementation of United Nations Conventions on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Desertification, and will probably be in the Rio+20 (if this meeting is confirmed) and are specifically made to governments and institutions with a role in the development of semiarid regions around the world.
